Our Mission

The mission of the Houghton Lake Historical Society is to bring together those people interested in the history and early development of the Houghton Lake area, and to collect and preserve in an accurate and authentic manor any material which may help to establish, illustrate, and educate people on the history of the area. The Society provides historical information to arouse interest in the past by publishing material in the newspapers or other media. The Society will cooperate with the Historical Society of Michigan and other historical societies to collect and preserve materials of state-wide significance.

The Village

Located in a lovely wooded area, the village and nature trail provide visitors with an opportunity to relax. BRING YOUR CAMERA!
The village features a school museum, operating general store, 19th century pioneer village, nature trail and a picnic area. Admission to the Village is $3.00 per person, children under 12 are free.

Village Museum with Historical School Room
An original hand hewn log schoolhouse built in 1876 to serve the children of Edna, now named Prudenville. The museum displays local logging artifacts, pictures, articles, the restored classroom of the first school of Houghton Lake, and upstairs living quarters.

The general store is a combined display building and actual store, selling goodies reminiscent of yesteryear.

The Playhouse

Our newest accusation is Houghton Lake's Historical Playhouse, adjacent to the Historical Village.
